A very popular remedy since its release to the general public is Ozempic. A semagglutinin that aims to treat type 2 diabetes, acts in satiety of hunger, keeping the user reluctant to eat for up to 12 hours. And that’s why many people use it (without medical recommendation) for weight loss. But this has its consequences.

Nutrilogist Marcella Garcez, professor and director of the Brazilian Association of Nutrology (ABRAN), was one of the guests of the conversation and drew attention to the abuse:
“My patients who actually have diabetes and need to use this medicine cannot find it in pharmacies due to the indiscriminate use of those who buy it only to lose weight. But resorting to the medicine without criteria can cause Side effects side effects and even worsening of obesity. In addition to being able to have a very serious impact on the health of the kidneys ”, explains the doctor.

What is Ozempic and how does it work in the body?
As Veja Saúde explains, Ozempic is the trade name of semaglutide, one of the substances that acts in the treatment of type 2 diabetes (in the same group are liraglutide and tirzepatida).
Semaglutide is the synthetic version of a substance in the body called GLP-1. He is responsible for improving the release of insulin from the pancreas (this hormone is essential for eliminating excess sugars from the circulation, preventing damage), causing the stomach to empty more slowly and controlling the sensation of hunger and satiety in the brain.
Ozempic is an injectable medicine (there is no version in capsules) which is applied once a week. despite being sold without prescriptionis a drug that should not be used without medical supervision.
The importance of regulation
Also at Casa Clan, Dr. Marcella called the attention of the authorities in charge of regulating the sale to carry out this check. “It is a medicine that could not be purchased without a prescription. In doing so, the lives are endangered not only of those who use it improperly, but also of those who really need it for health reasons and are no longer able to find the medicine at the pharmacy, because other people are buying it for misuse.”
