Monkeypox vaccination starts this 2; see who can be vaccinated

Monkeypox immunizers will initially be targeted at priority groups, as well as those who have had contact with the virus

This Monday, the Ministry of Health began distributing immunizers for the Monkeypox, or Mpox, vaccination campaign. The disease was formerly called “monkeypox”.

According to the file, the current Monkeypox epidemiological scenario presents a progressive decline. Therefore, people with a higher risk of contamination and progression to severe forms of the disease will be prioritized to be vaccinated.

The Ministry has authorized two vaccination strategies: pre and post exposure. The priority groups for pre-exposure are:

  • Individuals living with HIV/AIDS with immune status identified by a CD4 T cell count of less than 200 cells in the past six months: cisgender men, transvestites, and transgender women; aged 18 or over;
  • Professionals working in laboratories in contact with the virus (pre-exposure): people aged 18 to 49 who work directly with Orthopoxvirus [a família do vírus da monkeypox] in laboratories with biosafety level 3 (NB-3).

Post-exposure vaccination applies to:

  • People who have had direct contact with body fluids and secretions of people suspected, probable or confirmed to have monkeypox, whose exposure is classified as high or medium risk, according to the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) .

Furthermore, the Ministry of Health has reported that the vaccination schedule will be two doses, with a four-week interval between them. For now, the immunization is limited for use in adults 18 years of age and older.

The immunizer to be used in Brazil is Jynneos, and the responsible company is the Danish company Bavarian Nordic. This is the same vaccine used in the US and Europe.
