Celebrated on March 15, School Day celebrates the importance of education and school as a fundamental right of all citizens
Celebrated on March 15, the school day emerged to underline the importance of this institution for everyone: students, teachers and society at large. It is in the classroom that children heighten their social interaction and have the opportunity to learn rules and regulations fundamental to their development as human beings, far beyond literacy.
The first Brazilian schools were born on the initiative of Jesuit priests who arrived in the lands of Tupiniquim shortly after the colonization by the Portuguese. The first teaching center was founded in 1549 in Salvador (BA), by Father Manuel da Nóbrega and the Jesuit Rijo Rodrigues. All formal education was at that time the responsibility of the Catholic Church.
Shortly after it was the turn of São Paulo (SP) to have its own school. The priest Leonardo Nunes built a mud pavilion and opened an elementary school.
How to celebrate the school day
Every institution adopts the date celebration in some way, but the most popular tend to be a collection of educational and playful activities that work around understanding how the student sees the school and the values that are learned within it, such as respect , empathy, mutual trust, discipline and ethics.
The date is also a reminder to value the commitment and flexibility that schools need to adapt to the changes that world education undergoes every year. And, more than ever, reflect on what the process is like for students to keep their interest in returning to the classroom and having a future with greater opportunities.
