Learn expert tips for warming up and reducing the low, hoarseness in your voice after waking up
Who has never been ashamed to answer the phone immediately after waking up? Even without seeing the face, the voice of sleep betrays anyone. The phenomenon, which is natural in our body, occurs due to swelling that we feel in the morning, reaching the eyes, hands, face and vocal cords.
“As the vocal cords enlarge, the voice appears hoarse and more serious,” explains otolaryngologist Dr. Bruno Borges de Carvalho Barros. Although it is inevitable, it is possible to take the drowsy voice by taking a few simple actions. Below, the expert lists three suggestions.
How to get sleepy voice?
Avoid alcohol at night
To make your voice sleepy in the morning, it’s important to avoid habits that damage your vocal cords, such as consuming alcohol and foods that stimulate gastric juice production before bed. According to the doctor, these foods can cause reflux and, as a result, worsen the voice, making it hoarse.

Another way to get sleepy voice is through chewing. This is because the movement exercised by the muscles of the face and the larynx – the organ where the vocal cords are located – during breakfast during chewing and swallowing helps to improve the articulation of speech sounds and also the quality of the voice.
“But, if you need to use your voice with good quality in a short amount of time, it’s important to rotate your tongue and make (continuous) fricative sounds like Z, J and V,” suggests the expert.
Watch out for hoarseness
Once the body awakens, the vocal cords tend to deflate and the sleepy voice disappears. But if hoarseness doesn’t go away naturally, you need to see a doctor. “Hoarseness for an extended period of time is a strong sign that something is wrong with your vocal cords, so you need to seek medical help,” concludes Barros.
