Taking your pet on an international trip is not easy and requires planning. There are several strict rules that must be followed to ensure the safety and well-being of the animal, as well as to prevent the spread of disease in the country that will be the destination of the trip.
For Daniel Toledolawyer who works in the field of international law, founder of Toledo e Associados and partner of LeeToledo PLLC, transporting pets to the United States, for example, is a process that requires advance planning and attention to detail.
“The first step is to check the necessary requirements, which include health certificates, vaccinations and, in some cases, quarantine. During the journey, the animals must be kept in a safe and comfortable container, with enough food and water for the entire journey. Upon arrival at their destination they will be inspected by the immigration authorities and may undergo further examinations,” he reveals.
You need to be aware, as some breeds are banned in certain localities or even some states in the United States.
“Some very large dogs, such as pit bulls, are not allowed in many locations in the United States, whether they are hotels, homes or condominiums. For example, I resorted to a farm to leave my large dogs. Therefore, this point must be observed by those owners who want to bring their pets to the United States, without running the risk of being surprised upon arrival ”, she points out.
Pay attention to the need for a microchip
The microchip is the starting point for transporting any animal on an international journey.
“This is the first step for anyone wishing to travel to the United States with their dog, cat or any other pet. And it’s important to keep in mind that not just any microchip will be accepted on American soil. They must be framed in the ISO 11784 and ISO 11785 standards, which are recognized throughout the world. Typically, the procedure is performed by a veterinarian, where a small identification chip is inserted into the animal’s back, which serves as a document with all the information about the animal and its owner,” reports Toledo.
According to the lawyer, enlisting the help of a company that specializes in this type of transport could be the best way to go.
“That’s because these companies usually have experience and know what problems can arise. You also need to plan because it can take some time from implanting the chip to the final report. The veterinarian is aware of the necessary vaccines and other obligations that must be met that occur before, during and after the transport of the animals ”, he concludes.
