Two of the major common problems in the fall are i dry eye syndrome and eyelid diseases, such as sty and chalazion. So, to take care of your eyes during the season, it’s important to learn more about these conditions, their symptoms, and how to prevent and/or treat them.

For this, see below the information brought by the president of the Penido Burnier Institute of Campinas, the ophthalmologist LeƓncio Queiroz Neto.

dry eye syndrome

According to the ophthalmologist, the first reaction of the eyes to climate change is tear drying, which affects 12% of the population and causes dry eyes. This problem affects more women because menopause reduces the production of estrogen and the oily layer of tears. Other risk groups are contact lens wearers and those who spend long hours in front of the computer.

The ophthalmologist explains that the tear is responsible for protecting, oxygenating, hydrating, cleaning the ocular surface and maintaining corneal transparency, an external lens essential for good vision. Therefore, keeping your eyes lubricated prevents scarring and is essential for seeing well.

Symptoms

The dry eye symptoms listed by your ophthalmologist are: dry eyes, blurred vision, itching, burning, excessive tearing, sensitivity to light, eye strain on cell phones or computers, and red, irritated eyes that can improve with blinking.

Diagnosis and treatments

Queiroz Neto points out that in the office, dry eye diagnosis is fully automated. Tear film images allow the patient to visualize the recovery of the tear and, therefore, encourage treatment adherence, the ophthalmologist emphasizes.

According to him, the treatment it depends on the type and stage of the alteration. It can be done using lubricating eye drops that vary according to the diagnosed deficiency or the occlusion of the lacrimal points, for example.

Prevention

To prevent dry eyes, the ophthalmologist recommends the inclusion in the diet of nuts and fatty fish, such as cod, salmon and sardines. Furthermore, integration with omega 3 present in flaxseed capsules is recommended, which also protects the retina from the action of free radicals which lead to its degeneration.

sty and chalazion

Queiroz Neto points out that in Brazil, autumn is characterized by heat during the day, which facilitates the formation of painful blisters or inflammations on the eyelid, known as chalazion and stye. both have similar symptomssuch as swollen eyes, annoying sore on the eyelid, redness, sensitivity to light and pain when moving the eyeball, but the difference is that the chalazion is not caused by bacteria, but by an inflammatory process that causes the outlet channel to become blocked of a sebaceous gland.

Treatment

Queiroz Neto says that, at the first sign of a stye or chalazion, warm compresses should be applied to the eye, four times a day, for 15 minutes, made with gauze and saline. Usually, according to him, the stye goes away on its own – if it doesn’t, be sure to consult an ophthalmologist to indicate antibiotic eye drops. The chalazion, in turn, may require surgery, because it forms a granuloma and can interfere with vision.

Prevention

The main recommendations of the doctor to avoid diseases on the eyelids are:

  • Wash the eyelids and the base of the lashes with the PH neutral baby shampoo
  • Remove all eye makeup before going to bed
  • Avoid applying makeup to the inner edge of your eyelids
  • Dispose of expired makeup
  • Don’t share makeup and other cosmetics
  • Do a refractive test in case of recurrence of the chalazion
