We spoke to influencer and entrepreneur Dani Rudz and models Raphaella Tratske, Idaiane Wogel, Lais Velame and Loiane Bienow. The five beautiful and self-possessed women also repeat common phrases they hear over and over again, such as that wearing loose clothing, that wearing black makes you slimmer, and that you can’t wear anything skintight or colorful. See 7 lies or false news reminded by them that must be fought today and always.
1 – “Fat women can’t wear white, because they get fat”.
According to Dani Rudz, putting together a look depends on the pieces you choose, the fit and the proportion in which you compose the look. «And fat women can and must wear white when they want and can», says the entrepreneur, influencer and accelerator of fashion companies aimed at the plus size segment.
2 – “Fat people can only wear loose clothes”
This is one of the most heard phrases by plus size women. “Fat women can wear body-flattering pieces if they want to,” says Rudz. Model Raphaella Tratske thinks so too. “I will talk about a very ambiguous one which is oversize. There is a lot of talk about loose clothing to hide, but I think that with the right style, the oversized garment can lift the look. Something that was previously seen as clothing to hide, today comes to give the possibility to play with volumes – and attract attention!” And she adds: “Why go unnoticed, if I can be comfortable and elegant at the same time?”
3 – “Fat women shouldn’t wear blouses with spaghetti straps”
According to Dani Rudz, this is another lie already rooted in the collective unconscious. “Shoulder pads are democratic and should be worn by all body types. But if you don’t feel comfortable wearing just a spaghetti strap, you can layer it over a basic tee,” he advises.
4 – “A plus size woman cannot wear a top or anything that marks her body”
Nothing that marks the body of fat women is the same as saying that you can only wear loose clothing. “These are classic phrases that we hear all our lives, and a lot of people get scared. When they see us wearing something like that, they give us that recriminating look,” says model Loiane Bienow and adds: “Over the years I’ve learned to appreciating my curves and feeling just as beautiful as my body. And to wear what I’ve always wanted.”
5 – “Wearing black makes you lose weight”
Dani Rudz explains that black isn’t the only color that gives the impression of linearity in dressing. “Dark tones like purple, green, burgundy, blue also give this impression. But smart combinations of pieces, proper sizing, correct fit and modeling are very good for plural bodies, giving dignity to the dress and enhancing this body different. Who wants to lose weight on the look when the problem is ‘evaluating yourself’?”, adds Dani.
6 – “Colours and prints never”
Model Loiane Bienow recalls: “Another thing that is talked about a lot is colors, that it is better to use sober colors rather than using colors or stripes. We can use colors and stripes as much as you like, if that’s what you want,” completes the model . The model Lais Velame also goes along the same lines and she recalls that one of the lies she has always heard is that “we can only wear lifeless clothes, all black. Colors and prints never”.
7 – “The medium length only looks good on tall and thin women”
“That’s not true. Just put on your shoes and choose a midi height that fits your size,” she teaches Dani Rudz.
