Euthanasia for children under 12 is now permitted in the Netherlands


The measure, already authorized for children under the age of 1, would be a last option for cases in which palliative care does not reduce the patient’s suffering.

A euthanasiathe name given to the practice of provide a painless death to the terminally ill and causing great suffering, has been authorized in the Netherlands for children under the age of 12. Until then, only people of that age and children under the age of 1 could undergo the procedure – in the latter group, provided there was parental permission.

According to information disclosed last 14, the measure applies only when the only alternative to put an end to the suffering of the little ones. “This applies to children affected by an illness or condition so serious that death is inevitable and (…) foreseen with no possible future,” said Health Minister Ernst Kuipers.

Choice as a last resort

The new regulation comes in response to requests from specialists and paediatricians but does not yet have an effective date, although the government has told AFP news agency it should be by the end of the year. According to Ministry of Health spokesman Alex Dee, when the child is unable to request euthanasia, the parents can do so.

In Belgium, children and adolescents have been able to request the procedure since 2014: this was the first country in the world to authorize the measure for minors. The Belgian government does not impose age restrictions, but the patient must be ability to discern.
