The tattoo no longer needs to be permanent
According to Marisa Peraro, associate director of the Pró-corpo Estética clinic, tattoos no longer need to be permanent, as there are techniques capable of removing them completely. It is with this hope that Karina Costa bets on removing a tattoo.
In college and with little money, Karina got a tattoo project that her mother had made for her as a child. But the result was not what was expected. Since then, she’s been planning to do something with the tattoo that’s on her shoulder and it’s always exposed, which she doesn’t like much.
“I have decided that tattoo removal is the best option. I have spoken to specialists who have assured me that it is a safe procedure. I will finally be able to look in the mirror without the complex of wanting to hide the bad tattoo. Now I know that I will feel good when I’ll wear tank tops, my self-confidence will be better too,” she explains.
Main questions about the procedure
Despite not being a new procedure, there are still many questions surrounding the tattoo removal process. For this Pró-body – clinic specializing in beauty treatments – answers some questions about the treatment.
1. How does tattoo removal work?
By emitting light on the tattoo site, the remover gradually lightens the area, vaporizing the surface part of the skin and absorbing another part of the pigment by the patient’s immune system. The penetration of the laser reaches the dermis and, due to the heat emitted by the device, can cause some discomfort.
After applying the laser, the skin tends to form a protective crust which takes 7 to 10 days to dissolve. Within a period of approximately 30 days, it is acknowledged that the the skin returns to its natural appearancebut still with pigment defects – which are remnants of the tattoo.
2. How long does it take to remove the tattoo completely?
The duration of the process varies according to the size of the tattoo. The interval between sessions can be at least a month. However, it usually takes 45 to 60 days, depending on how completely the site heals. The longer the break, the better the session will be.
3. Which colors are easier to remove?
Black and/or dark pigment.
4. What care should be given to the skin before, during and after the procedure?
It is important to follow the recommendations, such as not exposing the tattoo to the sun during the entire treatment and use moisturizers and sunscreensso that the results of the laser application are intact skin without blemishes.
5. Are old tattoos harder to remove?
Not necessarily. Older tattoos have lower ink quality, which makes the process of breaking down the pigment easier. On the other hand, they mix well with other pigments, which makes the process difficult in some cases.
