On Instagram, the artist posted a video in which his oncologist, doctor Fernando Malufappears explaining why it was necessary to resume the fight against the problem.

“Simony has had a great response to radio and chemo on a bowel injury, which has been very important. However, there are still disease activity spots, which require us to resume chemo plus immunotherapy. She is thrilled. , is positive, is an inspirational person, an example of attitude, and we are hopeful that this new treatment can generate another great response. We hope!” said the specialist.

UNDERSTANDING CANCER RELAXATION

Bowel cancer is the third most common type of cancer in Brazil. “It comes from intestinal mucosal cells, usually following a benign polyp that turns malignant over time,” explains the Dr Suelen MartinsClinical oncologist at the CEON (Centro de Oncologia).

When in an early stage, the tumor is asymptomatic. However, in more advanced stages, there may be changes in bowel habits, abdominal pain, unexplained anemia, lack of appetite, weight loss and lack of energy. “The chances of a cure are greater the faster the cancer is identified,” she points out.

The doctor also lists the main risk factors. “Unhealthy lifestyle habits, obesity, a diet rich in fast food and ultra-processed foods, smoking, physical inactivity and family history are points that favor the onset of this problem”.

Diagnosis is made through colonoscopy, a test that visualizes the intestines and can also take a biopsy of a suspected lesion and polyp. Treatment is defined based on the location and extent of the disease.

“We consider immediate surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy followed by surgery, chemotherapy before or after treatment and also, in more advanced cases, chemotherapy with or without new drugs, such as immunotherapy and/or targeted drugs,” he specifies.

As for the disease coming back, Dr. Suellen says this can happen in the same organ or in others. This is because some cancer cells can stay in the body and multiply again.

“In the recurrence of bowel cancer, it is important to know whether it has occurred locally or if there are multiple points of metastasis. Imaging tests, for example tomography, MRI and PET-CT are used for this. It is worth mentioning that, in these cases, the treatment must be modified”, says the oncologist.

Finally, he underlines the importance of continuing with the medical follow-up, even after the end of the oncological therapies. “To detect recurrences early, it is essential to maintain periodic visits and to undergo tests on a certain frequency”.
