The father of a 10-month-old baby reports that a doctor from the Emergency Department (UPA) Central de Santos, on the coast of São Paulo, has prescribed his son an ointment that does not exist. The boy had been taken into care after he had a severe buttock allergy and diarrhoea. However, when the father went to buy one of the medicines prescribed by the professional, he discovered that the ointment medicine does not exist, only the syrup and pill versions exist.

According to the father, who preferred not to be identified, the child’s mother took him for medical treatment this Sunday the 30th, and the doctor who attended the child prescribed some medicines, among which were written: “Ointment to Loratadine – apply on the 12th in 12 hours”.

In touch with the report, the Regional Pharmacy Council of the State of São Paulo reported that in a consultation carried out on Tuesday 2 at the Anvisa portal (National Health Surveillance Agency) no registered presentation of ointment containing loratadine was found.

The Secretary of Health of Santos, in a note, also confirmed that the ointment does not exist, but informed that the UPA Directorate found a “typo” in the composition of the medicine (see full placement below).

“My son’s mother took him to UPA. My son has a very bad allergy on his skin and then he goes all red, really roasted. The doctor prescribed me loratadine ointment, but I went to three different pharmacies and I was informed at all that the medicine does not exist in ointment version, only liquid or pill”, highlighted the father of the child. The man also published a post on social media in which he regrets the episode.

What the Department of Health says

In a note, Santos’ health secretary clarifies that the hiring of the doctor is the sole responsibility of the Social Organization (OS) which manages the central UPA. “The Secretariat will open an investigation with the Supervision and Inspection Commission to investigate the professional’s conduct and take the appropriate measures”, he communicated to the Earth.

According to the management of the Central UPA, the child was assisted according to all the protocols recommended by the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM), with a complete diagnosis.

“Regarding the prescription of the ointment, the management of the unit found a typo in the composition of the medicine, which did not cause any harm to the patient, including that the prescribed formula does not actually exist,” the file said .

The management of the UPA Central also points out that, on a regular basis, numerous drugs are withdrawn from the market, either by reformulation, replacement or even exclusion from pharmacies, and, however much the healthcare professional tries to keep up to date, the dynamics of pharmaceutical companies often becomes very difficult keep up.

The technical team of the unit also informs that they have called the professional and warned you of the incident. The child’s family can contact UPA medical coordination to obtain an updated prescription.
