The orthopedist reveals why taking off your shoes can be healthy.
There are those who love it and those who hate it. But, the explanations of the orthopedic doctor, Dr. Bruno Takasaki Lee, foot specialist, from São Paulo, reveals why taking off your shoes can be healthy.
1-Sensory and motor stimuli
The representation area of the feet in the brain is similar to that of the hands. That’s why it receives – as much as the touch of the hands – sensory and motor stimuli. It is an important part of exploration and reconnaissance that always enhances the ability to develop and improve strength and coordination.
2- Strength and mobility
Bare feet are synonymous with gaining strength and mobility. And this explains why some common problems such as flat feet or plantar fasciitis can be prevented by walking with the feet on the ground, that is, when the mobility and strength of the joints and muscles of the feet increases. Like the whole body, the feet carry several muscles on the sole of the foot that are responsible for maintaining the arch: the structure that distributes pressure between the different areas of the foot, controlling the impact on the feet and also on the underlying joints.
3-Impact and cushioning
When the foot remains trapped in shoes for too long, they end up weakening and enriching the muscles. This affects the natural shock absorption and cushioning mechanism. The feet must be stimulated to perform different movements always inside and outside the shoes.
4-Relaxation
Direct contact with the ground, even indoors, favors a good energy exchange which would rebalance the body and help prevent stress. All this because when the feet touch the ground, they receive information about the ground in their nerve endings, which reach the brain and stimulate balance. With this posture is corrected and tensions are reduced, also relieving stress thanks to the lower production of cortisol.
