Increased muscle mass, decreased cellulite, disposition and increased libido are some of the benefits of using androgen hormone implants, for example, gestrinone. Popularly called the “beauty chip,” it has become widely used by women for its benefits, but recently its use for aesthetic purposes was banned by the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM) in April.

Plastic surgeon Renata Magalhães, who specializes in general and intimate plastic surgery, believes that despite the ban, it could continue to be used.

“I don’t work with hormones, I don’t prescribe them, I have no conflict of interest with the matter. However, being a plastic surgeon, I receive many women who use hormone therapies in my office. When I question the reasons and effects, most say that using hormones has greatly improved their life. Therefore, I believe they will not give them up, and even if doctors will not prescribe them, other professionals will,” she says.

The ban on beauty chips

The CFM’s reasons for banning the beauty chip relate to its indiscriminate use, lack of explanation of its side effects, unethical advertising, lack of consistent protocols demonstrating safe doses, according to the resolution published by the CFM.

“I believe there is a need for a broader discussion on the subject, with guidelines so that doctors can work to do the best for their patients. With the population already accustomed to the benefits, the mere ban will only incentivize the black market. People who could benefit from these treatments, provided adequate safety and information are provided to the patient, will no longer be assisted by ethical and qualified professionals and will certainly seek out those who prescribe irregularly,” says the doctor.

Side effects

Renata Magalhães describes her experience in the practice to explain how much patients suffer. It’s just that a side effect of the use of anabolic hormones is clitoral hypertrophy, that is, it can increase in size.

“The number of patients with this disorder who want to undergo surgery has grown a lot,” says the doctor who specializes in intimate surgery, clitoridoplasty.

Note that clitoral enlargement can become more of an emotional issue than a cosmetic issue.

“Due to the anatomical embarrassment, the woman ends up inhibiting herself in her moments of intimacy. In addition, the enlarged organ can also lead to pain from rubbing with clothes,” she explains.

Additionally, the skin may become thicker, with acnes, and you may have increased hair growth, fertility changes, and hair loss. The CFM lists other adverse effects as possible cardiovascular alterations, liver disease, mental and behavioral disorders, as well as endocrine disorders.
