In a national statement, Nísia Trindade said that the moment is that of “transition” to the “continuous confrontation” of covid and criticized the conduct of Bolsonaro’s management during the pandemic

The Minister of Health, Nisia Trindade, issued an official statement this Sunday evening, the 7th, to reinforce the importance of the country continuing to do so coronavirus immunizationeven after the World Health Organization having declared an end to the international health emergency for the disease last Friday. “This is the most effective and safest way to protect our population. We must unite for health, in defense of life,” she said.

“Infections with the Sars-Cov-2 virus will continue and we must be careful. Surveillance, diagnosis, assistance and vaccination systems must therefore be strengthened”, warned the minister. “In this scenario, it is understood that momentum signifies a transition from emergency mode to an ongoing confrontation, within the sphere of infectious disease prevention and control.”

Nísia also took advantage of the statement on national radio and television networks to condemn the way the government Jair Bolsonaro (PL) led the fight against the pandemic and stressed that more than 700,000 deaths have been recorded in the country, more than 10% of the world total.

“The worst impact was the loss of so many lives and the awareness that many could have been saved. (…) Another result would have been if the previous government, throughout the pandemic, had respected the recommendations of science. If they had been followed and fulfilled the obligations of the ruler to protect the population”.

The minister also thanked the Butantane InstituteTHE Fiocruz and the Anvis for the production and approval of coronavirus vaccines. “Even with all the dismantling of science and technology, our universities and research institutes have spared no effort in finding solutions,” said she, who led Fiocruz through much of the health crisis.

Nísia also thanked the health workers and “the governors and mayors who have not let themselves be carried away by denial” in dealing with the pandemic, as well as defending the strengthening of the Unified Health System.

“It is time for us too to learn the lessons of this pandemic. (…) To prepare ourselves with coherent programs for future epidemics and health emergencies. To strengthen our scientific and technological capacity and to overcome social inequalities, which make the pandemic reach unequally those in a more vulnerable social situation,” the minister said.
