French fries can trigger anxiety and depression, according to one study

Research from the University of San Francisco suggests that frequent and excessive consumption of potato chips can cause symptoms of mental disorders

Who doesn’t like french fries? Alone, as a snack or with a meal, it is the darling of the most varied palates. However, consuming food too often can have a negative impact on mental health. This is what a study by the University of San Francisco in the United States suggests.

According to research conducted in 2018, eating french fries frequently and excessively can trigger symptoms of anxiety and depression. To reach this conclusion, the scientists analyzed the eating habits of more than 100,000 people over eight years.

The results showed that people who ate french fries two or more times a week had a 17% higher risk of developing symptoms of depression than those who ate french fries less than once a month. Additionally, those who frequently ate french fries also had an 8 percent higher risk of developing anxiety.

What is the relationship between french fries and mental health?

The researchers explained that foods high in trans fats and simple carbohydrates can cause harm to the body by affecting the balance of important neurotransmitters. This is the case, for example, of serotonin, which is directly related to mood and well-being.

On the other hand, including healthy foods in the diet improves the production of neurotransmitters responsible for the feeling of well-being, such as serotonin and endorphins, improving mood, explains Dr. Lorena Balestra, PhD in nutrology and endocrinology.

Should I Stop Eating French Fries?

It is worth mentioning that this research should not be seen as a definitive conclusion that the consumption of French fries is directly related to the development of symptoms of anxiety and depression.

“More research and systematic reviews, including meta-analyses, are still needed to establish a clear relationship between this food and mental health. Other factors, such as genetics and the environment, also play a role in the development of these problems.” says Lorraine.

However, it is undeniable that maintaining a healthy and balanced diet is essential for the general well-being of body and mind.

“Including a variety of nutritious foods and avoiding foods that are highly processed and high in trans fats can help reduce the risk of developing a variety of diseases, including mental illness. In addition, other healthy habits, such as regular physical activity and maintaining quality sleep also contributes to mental and physical health,” recommends the doctor.
