Vegan skincare: what it is and benefits

Formulas without components of animal origin may bring greater benefits, but there are a few points to pay attention to

Vegan skincare has never been talked about so much. With a projection of moving $21 billion worldwide by 2027, according to a study by MarketGlass, the segment is also gaining more and more space in Brazil with the arrival of international brands and the launch/growth of national brands.

Including a survey of the Opinion box in 2022at the request of Flora Cosméticos and Cleaning, points out that 9 out of 10 Brazilian women prefer vegan beauty products (without components of animal origin, such as honey and beeswax, lanolin, collagen and carmine), natural (without synthetic components) and not tested on animals (cruelty-free) — even if, due to price or for another reason, they end up consuming conventional alternatives.

WHAT IS VEGAN SKIN CARE

Before we dive into the benefits for your face, it’s important to understand exactly what vegan skincare is. Just like following a vegan diet, skincare involves forgoing all animal-based ingredients in the formula. In practice, that means avoiding ingredients like beeswax, collagen, lanolin, keratin, carmine, gelatin, honey, and squalane.

But a common mistake is to assume that natural skincare is also, by proxy, vegan. Likewise, “cruelty-free” doesn’t automatically mean that a product is vegan. Its ingredients have simply not been tested on animals by a supplier, manufacturer, manufacturer or third party. Some brands can be cruelty-free and natural without being vegan and vice versa.

Which brings us to the biggest problem in the vegan beauty market: regulation. There is no official certification agency. So it’s important to always do your research before buying.

VEGAN SKIN CARE BENEFITS

Besides being good news for animals, vegan skincare is also better for all skin types, especially if you’re prone to acne or suffer from sensitivities. Some popular animal ingredients can be heavier, greasier, and clog pores (lanolin, for example, is the fat in sheep’s wool).

“This type of formula has many health benefits, including a lower risk of allergies and toxicity to the body and the environment. In other words, including them in your skincare routine is very good for the individual and for the society as a whole. to whole,” says the dermatologist Alessandra Fragaco-founder and scientific director of Hi beautiful.

But to have benefits it is not enough to be vegan. “More than vegan, they need to be ‘clean’, free from potentially harmful derivatives. This concept, called Clean Beauty, is still little known in Brazil, but the trend is that it is gaining more and more space in the market,” he points out the specialist.

Ah, and for those who are still a little behind in terms of high performance, Alessandra guarantees that agents extracted from plants and the like offer results as good as those most used in industry today. “The secret lies in the high concentration of the active ingredients,” she explains.
