What do you find in our searches?
We all deeply desire recognition of our identity, through a search for experiences and meanings that bring us satisfaction and pleasure. This impulse that drives the human being, in this identification, was considered by Freud as libido, the energy that we allocate to the objects of our desires and therefore we experience this pleasure, for him this energy arises in the transition from childhood to adolescence. Jung believed that this drive already exists in the human psyche, from birth, just like an instinct.
Whatever the origin of this drive that moves us towards satisfaction (pleasure), the pitfalls are the same! We are looking for something that satisfies us, that gives us more meaning and makes us part of something great. Something beyond selfish concerns as we seek to devote our lives to the service of a supreme authority and a greater cause. But how can this not be a desire of our ego? What hides the need for recognition and notoriety or, simply, for escape and denial of our reality and condition? Not that this is a bad thing, but it is a duality that needs to be balanced. However, if this idea has already crossed your mind, you have surely come across the Hermit, one of those two arcana of the tarot that has a lot to teach us about our personal transformation.
Two Arcana of the Tarot: The Hermit’s Call
Our overriding need is to feel satisfaction. We see this mainly through Generation Z and Alpha (born in the digital age), as we are marked by the pursuit of minimum effort and short-term results. Could it be because we grew up dissatisfied and tired, carrying the weight of trying to be better than those who came before, in a social and historical context where there weren’t as many structures available as we currently do? We enter this dispute and feed on guilt, often we only realize when the body gives the signals, and there are still those who leave without even knowing it.
Do you accept this invitation or not?
In any case, in this search for fulfillment and pleasure, no one wants to accept the invitation of the Hermit – one of the two arcana of the tarot – to find himself alone in his cave for a while. Yet, he comes with his lantern (symbol of self-earned intelligence) and staff (symbol of prudence and spirituality), asking us: will you have the patience and prudence to clear your mind? Do you know the practice of balance necessary to not get distracted by silence, to be able to listen to the voice of one’s conscience and no longer that of guilt?
A very demanding task, even more in the digital world, but if learned, the guarantee is progress, in the long term, but well structured, since we have previously already gone through the arcane of justice, which asked us to reflect, now we are facing the hermit, who asks us that changes are established with great prudence, prudence and intimate observation.
Self-recognition is the beginning of the journey and not the end.
When we began this journey of self-knowledge, with the help of the two arcana of the tarot, we heard a lot about the search for the roots of the problems that have been with us for a long time. Sometimes these problems also come from our family system, such as genetic inheritance. It turns out that defining self-knowledge as a philosophy of knowing oneself, through the investigation of memories, traumas, feelings, may seem like self-knowledge to many – but, in reality, it is nothing more than a limited idea , fueled by the guilt of constantly healing. However, this stage of healing and resolving this inner discomfort is only the beginning of the journey, it is still very much needed, because only then does our mind, in a subtle way, listen to our true consciousness and begin the next stage of this journey.
Not everything is self-knowledge
The problem is when we get stuck in this early stage and call it self-knowledge, we go in circles, we don’t know how to get out of it, but we try hard. Eventually, tired, we find situations and companies that validate our process and pull us out of that cave. This is why we ardently desire the arrival of something that distances us from the incessant intimate dialogue, from that monologue which to many may seem boring, obsessing and too tiring, but which is the Hermit’s proposal which will teach us to identify these voices of guilt and to silence them, so that we no longer identify and resort to escapes, distractions, validations. We are free to heed the call of true conscience.
The Hermit and the Arcanum of the Moon
There is a connection between these two arcana of the tarot. The Hermit who has respected her time and who can now feel the call of his own soul, to immerse himself and recognize himself in the deepest essence of his own unconscious. It is the beginning of the exploration of life with conscience, with this conquered prudence, he enters his psycho-emotional universe, the unconscious represented by the Arcanum of the Moon, where there are many influences, third party opinions (social conventions, relatives, friends , family) and which merges with your dual thoughts and with your identity.
If you are afraid to enter the Hermit’s cave, you will certainly be terrified of entering the murky waters of the unconscious, represented by the Moon, but it is inevitable, because only with its experience can we organize all these recordings and get out of the illusion. He is the representation of our first birth, the first awareness of what we are conditioned to be, his number is 9 (historically related to management, initiation), while the Moon is our second birth 9+9=18 , is the first arcana of the path of evolution, it is the first contact with our soul and the search for experiences that correspond to our truth.
