The expert answers questions about face rejuvenation and the use of collagen

We haven’t found the fountain of youth yet. But science has found new formulas and treatments to make us look younger and younger. Among them, we often hear about the use of collagen. The substance, naturally produced by the body, is the protein responsible for ensuring the firmness and elasticity of the skin. Important for preventing the appearance of stretch marks, wrinkles, expression lines and also for the health of hair and nails, there are different forms of treatment that use collagen. To better understand the skin aging process and substance use, dermatologist Dr. Vivian Loureiro answered some of the main questions.

  1. What is the relationship between aging and collagen loss? Over the years, two processes occur: a decrease in the production of collagen and an increase in its destruction. That is, there is a progressive decline in the amount of collagen fibers and, with this, loss of skin firmness and elasticity.
  2. Is there an ideal age to start treatment? Collagen loss begins around age 25 and averages around 1% per year. This rate more than doubles after menopause. Thinking about long-term and preventive treatment, we suggest starting collagen-stimulating procedures from the age of 30.

  1. Is collagen essential for skin rejuvenation? Collagen is a protein found in various body structures such as skin, joints, tendons and muscles. Collagen fibers give support and support to cells. In the skin, collagen maintains the skin’s firmness, elasticity, and resilience. With aging and loss of collagen, skin loses its firmness and becomes thinner and saggy. Therefore, stimulating collagen production is essential for aging well.
  2. Collagen can be found in different formats. Is taking collagen orally, for example in candy, effective? Oral collagen supplementation appears to be beneficial. There are scientific studies that show that taking collagen stimulates our cells to produce collagen fibers. Normally, this integration is done with powder, which must be diluted in water or juice, or in capsules. The amount of collagen present in bullets, for example, is very small and therefore not effective. We would have to ingest a very large number of bullets to reach the minimum amount needed.
  3. How is the treatment for collagen production performed? There are treatments that stimulate production, such as lasers, radiofrequency, microfocused ultrasound and biostimulators. Furthermore, protecting yourself from the sun and having healthy lifestyle habits, such as not smoking and following a balanced diet, reduce collagen degradation.
  4. How long does it take to see results? Most of the procedures that stimulate collagen do not bring immediate results. There is an immediate contraction of the fibers lasting 24 to 48 hours, but it is transient. We call it the “Cinderella Effect”. It takes time to produce new collagen fibers, so results usually begin 1 to 2 months after treatment.
