How many adults have become readers because they had contact with comics in their early childhood? Indeed, the format is ideal for the little ones who are still starting to get used to the stories presented on paper.
“The visual appeal, the narrative details present in the images, the dynamics of the dialogues in balloons and the construction of charismatic and caricatured characters make the comic [ histórias em quadrinhos] an excellent gateway to the world of reading“, explains Liliani Aparecida da Rosa, teacher of the Reading and Writing Workshop at the Colégio Positivo. “The elements appeal to all ages, however, children and adolescents end up sympathizing more with this reading format,” she adds.
Indeed, even adults cannot resist a good comic, even if the content is childish. It is worth mentioning that, here in Brazil, “comics” is the popular nomenclature of those comics with more affordable prices and, in general, aimed at children (such as Turma da Mônica and Disney characters). But the universe of comics is immensefilled with amazing superhero sagas and deep and complex storytelling.
That’s why the comic book decision can’t be random. “Parents should pay attention to the indicative age range, select stories that address topics and topics of interest to the reader, accompany this reading with children and be with them when the child chooses. Being aware of what children are reading allows for dialogue and orientation,” advises the teacher.
How to encourage kids to go beyond comics
Liliani reminds that comics are a great entry point, but that nothing prevents the small magazine from accompanying the reader’s journey as he grows and advances in his reading level. “It’s common for comic book consumers to migrate to more complex series, which present a higher level of challenge,” he points out.
To encourage the child and, subsequently, the adolescent to enter into contact with other genres, it is essential to understand their reading preferences. For example: if you like adventure and mystery stories, books with narratives of this genre are worth submitting. To introduce young people to the classics of literature, one suggestion that the teacher gives is suggest comics that adapt these stories and make them more accessible.
