Low libido could be stress; see signs that your body is not well

The decline in hypoactive sexual desire is often linked to psychological or environmental causes

Although it is important to investigate whether there are gynecological causes for the decline in libido, the main factors for the reduction of hypoactive sexual desire are not physical or organic causes, underlines gynecologist and obstetrician Leonardo Valladão.

“It’s not an ovarian malfunction or a woman who has a change in the vulva, vagina, who has pain during intercourse. Most of the causes are linked to tiredness, stress, decrease or loss of stimuli from the partner”, underlines the doctor, a specialist in Fetal Medicine, in an interview with Terra.

This is not accidental. As Valladão points out, women are overburdened in the job market and also in the family environment, especially when they have children. Thus, for example, reports of tiredness, stress and lack of time for physical activity are common.

chronic stress

In a complementary evaluation to that of the gynecologist, psychiatrist Danielle H. Admoni points out that this problem is usually identified in patients with chronic stress, a problem that is considered a risk factor for several cardiovascular diseases.

In these cases we are not dealing with episodes of “nervousness”, but with constant situations that culminate in the release of substances such as adrenaline and noradrenaline. Such hormones are neurotransmitters that increase heart and respiratory rates and vascular resistance, causing physical impacts on the individual.

Another substance stimulated by this tension is cortisol, known as the stress hormone. When at high levels in the body, it also affects the libido.

“The libido is closely related to the emotional issue, so if we are not well from a psychological point of view and, above all, in the relationship, the libido ends up being affected a lot, it is one of the things we always ask in the first consultation”, confirms the doctor.

Stress also damages hair

It’s not just sex drive that suffers from the body’s stress levels. The increase in substances such as adrenaline and cortisol causes weakened nails and hair loss.

To make matters worse, this decline has a three-month cycle. According to the psychiatrist, hair may continue to fall out after this period or it may start falling out even three months after the event that generated the peak of stress. “We can’t even remember what caused the crash,” he points out.

Fight the causes

When it is identified that the root of the problem has a psychosomatic background, the path is to investigate: what is the reason for so much stress? Once the answer is found, the goal should be to mitigate the causes.

This includes seeking therapeutic care whenever possible; get away from the nauseating environment, even when possible; give priority to the practice of physical activity, which, as Valladão points out, is a way for women to release testosterone naturally; and even meditate.

“Mindfulness exercises help reduce the stress load: this may be a way for this woman to resume her sexual activity with a normal libido,” advises the gynecologist.
