The earlier the treatment, the better the chances of recovery.
Have you ever exercised and at some point felt that pain in the region that is known as the “bridge” between tendons and bones? So it is! Know that this type of discomfort is common for those who live with one or more types of arthritis and is known as enthesopathy or enthesitis. In this sense, find out more about what enthesopathy is.
What is enthesopathy?
“It’s the inflammation of the tendon joining the bone. So, any time the tendon joins the bone and that site of the tendon’s insertion into the bone it can cause inflammation, which can lead to degeneration. This is enthesopathy”, replied exclusively for Sport Life, the orthopedic surgeon of the Albert Einstein Hospital, Dr. Mario Ferretti.
The main causes, common example and prevention
The main cause of enthesopathy is injury due to overload in sports, and at the same time, it can also occur in case of rheumatism or some form of rheumatism, such as seronegative spondyloarthropathies.
The common enthesopathy is that of the calcaneus tendon and affects runners with repetitive motions with plantar flexion and dorsiflexion while running multiple times. These are push-ups that require too much of the heel. There are still the aggravating circumstances of inappropriate tennis, the rigidity of the terrain, mistakes and sudden changes in training. Athletics, volleyball and basketball players are also prone to this problem.
“There are intrinsic factors of the person himself, such as sometimes inflexibility of the triceps surae tendon of the calcaneus, weakness of the triceps surae musculature, and extrinsic factors, which are the surface of the ground, the footwear used and abrupt changes in training, such as increasing intensity, speed and tempo. It is also very common in jumpers, who have an intense training pace,” added Dr. Mario.
“Therefore, stretching and strengthening are key parts of this process. When pain is already important, treatments with analgesics and anti-inflammatories help well. Ice, physiotherapy, immobilization for a period of time can help. Recalling that in the case of inflammatory diseases it is the specific treatment of the disease that is important,” the orthopedic doctor of the Albert Einstein Hospital and the Cohen Institute Dr. Marco Tulio Costa quoted in contact with Sport Life.
Additions on enthesopathy
The recovery time takes into account the degree of involvement, i.e. if the tendon is already compromised with the tendon or necrotic area and it is often necessary to stop intense training. “(Recovery) time varies. It can range from three to four weeks to three to six months,” the orthopedic surgeon said.
“Many times the person gets a little better and then goes back to training. This doesn’t get better and the training is sore. The tendon is insufficient. Recovery becomes unfeasible and sometimes surgical treatment is required,” concluded Dr. Mario Ferretti.
Therefore, there is no treatment definition for enthesopathy, but what is indicated are treatments for the diseases they cause. The recommendation is usually to combine exercise, rest, and medication. The doctor can decide what is optimal based on the person’s condition.
