Journalist and model Lygia Fazio could not resist a stroke she suffered about a month ago and died on June 1, while undergoing procedures to remove the PMMA applied to her buttocks. It ended up spreading throughout the body, causing various infections.

Relatives and friends mourned the deaths and told of Licia’s struggle to reverse the application of the product three years ago. Friend and journalist Meiri Borges reports that Lygia was concerned about beauty, like all women, and even after doctors refused to apply it, she injected PMMA in a clandestine place, which she classified as “a time bomb ” in her friend’s life. .

Understand the use of PMMA

PMMA ― or polymethyl methacrylate ― is a synthetic material and, according to the plastic surgeon Patricia Marchesimember of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery, it can only be used in specific cases and in small quantities.

In Brazil, PMMA for subcutaneous fillings must be registered with Anvisa, as it is a class IV sanitary product (maximum risk). Even so, the substance is attracting more and more women thanks to the proposal of instant results.

Composed of microspheres of a material very similar to acrylic plastic, PMMA diffuses through the fabric in the region after being applied.

“PMMA is highly sought after because it is not absorbed by the body, but can cause unpredictable long-term reactions. It hardens at the application site and can cause complications with irreversible sequelae, such as chronic infections and deformities,” warns the surgeon.

The expert explains that once injected, PMMA diffuses through the tissues and cannot be easily removed, unlike a silicone implant, which can be removed at any time, or the application of hyaluronic acid, which is also a type of filling with much more security.

Better alternatives for women

Patrícia Marques clarifies that bioplasty, also known as no-scalpel plastic surgery, is a non-surgical procedure that uses fillers ― such as polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) ― to reshape areas of the face and body, but it is not the safest technique for give volume to any part of the body.

Silicone implants and fat grafting with fat transfer to the region where more volume is desired are the most indicated surgical interventions. PMMA can never be used as a substitute for silicone, especially in patients who require the technique for application in the buttocks, as happened with Lygia, because the dose used in this region must be high, much higher than that of a simple Filling.

The importance of qualified professionals

Anvisa warns that the product can only be administered by qualified professionals. For each patient, the doctor must determine the doses and number of injections necessary, according to the characteristics of each patient, the areas to be treated and the type of indication.

Anvisa also clarifies that the product is not contraindicated for application in the buttocks for corrective purposes, however there is no indication for volume augmentation, either on the body or on the face.

“It is always advisable to consult an accredited and responsible doctor to evaluate the application according to the correction to be performed and the technical guidelines for using the product”, concludes Patricia.
