Disney launches a reinterpretation of the children’s classic and represents the characters with real marine animals
The Little Mermaid was written by the famous Danish author Hans Christian Andersen. First published in 1837, the tale tells the story of Ariel, a charming young mermaid who lives at the bottom of the sea. In 2023, Disney released a live which is a re-imagining of this children’s classic. The film is directed by Rob Marshall and stars Halle Bailey.

1. Sole
The Flounder is depicted as a fish Ariel’s faithful companion. It is believed that he was visually inspired by the real angelfish. This is a species found in tropical coral reefs. Its basic coloration is blue to blue-green, with yellow or orange vertical stripes running across the body. Additionally, it has a bright blue band around its head that resembles a crown, contributing to its common name.

Ursula, the villain of The Little Mermaid, is a witch of sea with tentacles. These tentacles are similar to those of octopuses. These cephalopods are known for their intelligence and mimetic abilities. They can change their appearance and colors to blend in with their surroundings, helping them protect themselves from predators and hunt down their prey.
5. ariel
In the story, Ariel is an inquisitive young mermaid, known for her beautiful voice and fish tail. In real life, there are no mermaids like those depicted in fairy tales. However, some marine mammals, such as dolphins and whales, have a way of doing this fin caudal, which could be compared to that of sirens.
