Understand how the brain works when we are in love

The neurosurgeon explains what happens in the organ during the process of conquest and seduction

Oxytocin, known as “the love hormone,” plays a crucial role in bonding and strengthening relationships. Produced in the hypothalamus (which coordinates most endocrine functions) and released by the neurohypophysis (extension of the brain), it is responsible for promoting feelings of affection, intimacy and trust.

The process of conquest and seduction involves the brain, which works hard to prepare the body and behavior, stimulating the reward center and providing pleasant sensations and sexual desire.

“Dopamine, a neurotransmitter, activates the reward system and triggers the release of testosterone which stimulates libido in both men and women,” explains neurosurgeon and neuroscientist Dr. Fernando Gomes, of the Hospital das Clínicas in São Paulo.

He adds that prolactin, also a hormone, is related to sexual satisfaction and oxytocin is related to feelings of coziness and warmth. Its production and secretion help people love each other and stay together for a long time.

Our brain prompts us to think about the person while falling in love

Some areas of the brain are “turned off”

The doctor says certain areas of the brain need to be “turned off,” in both men and women, so that other areas can be activated during the conquest, desire, and companionship of your loved one. “In particular, the amygdala, in the temporal lobes, the ‘defense’ center of flight or combat, is ‘turned off’, and pleasure centers, such as the ventral tegmental area, are activated,” explains Dr. Fernando Gomes Pinto, neurosurgeon and member of the Brazilian Society of Neurosurgery (SBN).

In women, the left lateral orbitofrontal cortex, responsible for controlling elementary desires, also becomes silent. And then they can “relax” their worries and simply love and be loved.

Thoughts about your loved one

The pleasure center for both men and women is located in the hypothalamus. Agree with the doctor. Fernando, a loved one is someone with the potential to activate our pleasure area today and hopefully forever.

“That’s why our thoughts, desires and dreams, generated and interpreted in our frontal lobes, always prompt us to think about our loved one. Especially in the dating stage, the passion stage,” she reveals.
