The way of jewels
The federal police investigate the former president Jair Bolsonaro for the crimes of embezzlement and embezzlement in the case of the jewels, sent to him and the former first lady by the government of Saudi Arabia.
The pieces arrived in Brazil in 2021, in the baggage of advisers to the then Minister of Mines and Energy, Bento Albuquerque. As they were not declared by the authorities, the jewels were withheld by the Federal Revenue Service.
At the end of his mandate, Bolsonaro tried to remove luxury goods from Guarulhos airport, sending advisers to pick them up.
The Internal Revenue Service, however, refused to hand over the parts, as goods brought in from overseas must pay a 50% tax when they exceed a value of US$1,000. If the traveler does not declare what he is carrying in his luggage and is surprised, the tax rises to 100% of the amount.
Gifts destined for the Presidency of the Republic are exempt from payment, but must be declared and destined for public collection.
Former President Jair Bolsonaro is under investigation on suspicion of not having made this postponement, which would allow him to keep the jewels.
Bolsonaro (PL) testified to the PF about the case in early April. He was listened to for about three hours by two delegates from the guild.
According to the defense, the former president claimed to have knowledge of the jewels seized from the Revenue Agency 14 months after the incident.
