Lessons learned during the pandemic drive the development of new vaccines. Need to improve communication with the population
After science has demonstrated its high capacity to develop vaccines in record time during the covid pandemic, we can expect a lot of new things for the next few years. “The pandemic has been a great catalyst and accelerator of scientific development,” says microbiologist Natalia Pasternak, president of the Instituto Questão de Ciência. “We’re reaping very rich rewards from this whole process, advances that will certainly help fight other diseases.”

The drive towards vaccination is directly linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations (UN) for the year 2030 – in particular Target 3: “Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all, all age”. The commitments made by Brazil within this goal include the end of epidemics such as tuberculosis, malaria, viral hepatitis and diseases transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
For public health doctor Gonzalo Vecina, it makes perfect sense to associate the cause of vaccination with the need to reduce social inequalities in Brazil. After all, when people are caught up in the immediate survival challenge, they tend not to worry about the disease. “We have learned a lot in the pandemic from a scientific point of view. Now we know better about our immune system, which protects us from what is not part of our body, and this opens up several avenues, including the fight against cancer, ”has analysis. “From a social point of view, the balance is negative, with fake news, the position of the leaders opposed to the vaccine and misinformation often coming from the doctors themselves and from the doctors’ advice”.
