The project which provides for the establishment of an Animal Mediated Education, in which knowledge relating to the protection of animals will be taught, with the presence of a pet in the schools of São Paulo and transforming the school environment into a “Pet Friendly “, was approved by the three standing commissions of the Legislative Assembly of the State of São Paulo.
Inspired by the “Cãolega” project, successfully implemented in Recife in Pernambuco, state deputy Leticia Aguiar (PSL) had the Law n. 853of 2019, of his authorship, and which establishes the “Amicão” program in public and private schools in the state of São Paulo, approved by the Constitution, Justice and Writing Commission and the Education and Culture Commission, this week the project was also approved by the Finance and Budget Committee, and lends itself to the analysis of all deputies and to the vote in the plenary.
What is the “Amicão” project?
The “Amicão” project also bears the signature of former deputy delegate Bruno Lima, who, like Leticia Aguiar, is a strong defender of the animal cause. For the deputy, the project is important because it aims to raise public awareness on the fight against crime against pets.
“It is important to draw attention to the crimes of animal abuse and trafficking, we have an obligation to look into the education and training of these children,” she said.
With the project, the State Government will be able to insert a subject in the curriculum of schools where knowledge related to the protection of animals will be taught, with the presence of a pet in the classroom.
“We understand that the presence of these new members in schools is important for the coexistence of students and will help children and adolescents with Down syndrome, attention deficit disorder, autism or developmental delay, to feel included in the student community and to use this new discipline as a kind of complementary and follow-up treatment,” said MEP Leticia Aguiar.
Can schools be pet friendly?
The English expression ‘pet friendly’ has become fashionable, and characterizes “animal-friendly” places. The idea is not new and is linked to a series of issues involving the pet universe and education, ranging from social responsibility, animal abandonment, learning and cognitive development of students with disabilities or special needs, bullying, the development of a sense of responsibility, as well as the possibility of preparing children emotionally and socially, these and other advantages that the presence of animals at school can bring.
