What is duathlon?

“It is important to underline that there are two modalities (Triathlon and duathlon), which have been part of our physical culture since childhood: cycling and running. But even if they are two common modalities, it is important to have a medical evaluation, since the practice will involve high-intensity aerobic efforts, ”says the company technical manager of Cia Athletica, Cacá Ferreira, exclusively for Sport Life.

Although recent, Brazil has hosted duathlon competitions such as Thunderman, Trirex and Duoman. The initial part of the circuit is the race, which is then “swapped” by the bike and usually ends with another short race section.

Details of duathlon competitions and training sessions

The ITU (International Triathlon Union) World Triathlon has established the distances to be covered in duathlon as sprint, standard and long distance respectively. Sprints are short courses, starting with 5km of running interspersed with 20km of cycling and another 2.5km of running.

The standard is known to give the athlete 10km of running, 40km of cycling and another 5km of running. Finally, the long distance requires the competitor to complete 10km run, 150km cycle and another 30km run.

“The ideal training frequency for duathlon can vary based on a few factors, including: age, previous experience level, current fitness, goal, willingness to train, and medical history. However, your planning should include isolated sessions of each modality and also combined, simulating how it happens in competitions. In most planning sessions you can alternate, i.e. one day dedicated to cycling and another day to running, in this way you will avoid injuries due to the repetition of the same movement. intensity can be light to moderate aerobics in most sessions and reserve one or a maximum of two sessions per week for high intensity.

Having a check-up by a nutritionist is very important to have a balanced diet so that the practitioner can perform”, concludes Cacá Ferreira.
