Why at work it is useful to eat not in the company of colleagues, but alone

Lunch break is every office worker’s favorite time. One-on-one chats, fresh gossip, and communal salad cooking bring people together. But experts believe that it is better to refuse lunch with colleagues!

Let me warn you right now: eating alone is only best for those trying to lose weight. Others may not avoid their colleagues. But still, knowing about the dangers of common lunch breaks will not be superfluous for anyone.

Scientists came to the conclusion about the risks of communal meals after a series of experiments in which women ate together with colleagues or friends. On average, study participants ate 150 more calories per meal than if they ate alone. They also tended to gain 4 kilograms per year – only in the context of sharing a meal with someone.

Professor Susanna Higgs from the University of Birmingen thinkthat such a tendency is linked to our animal instincts. When we share food with someone, we often try to get a larger portion than others – and also rarely refuse if we are entitled to something.

Moreover, during a convivial dinner, it is not the food that takes precedence, but the communication. Because of this, you may feel less full – and eat more than we need.

Of course, the study authors don’t even think about encouraging people to become outcasts. A much more logical conclusion to this finding is the need to carefully monitor their portion sizes. You can also offer your colleagues an easy walk after lunch. So you’ll burn calories and maybe find more abstract conversation starters!
