According to studies and medical professionals, chocolates made with a higher percentage of cocoa, i.e. the more bitter, are the best when it comes to health. And, contrary to what many still believe, they are, yes, indicated by nutritionists for the food routine.

Proof of this is a 2019 study published in the journal Depression and Anxiety, in which people evaluated who consumed any amount of dark chocolate during two 24-hour periods were 70% less likely to report symptoms of depression than those who they didn’t eat chocolate.

But then why does cocoa have so many benefits?

In order for the consumption of chocolate to be conscious and healthy, it is necessary to pay attention to the concentration of cocoa, which can vary from product to product. Therefore, the higher the cocoa concentration, as in the case of bitter and semi-sweet chocolate, the greater the health benefits.

According to nutritionist and member of Bio Mundo, Fernanda Larralderegular consumption of this ingredient can help improve mood, blood circulation, regulate blood sugar and protect the heart, all thanks to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

“Cocoa has a high content of flavonoids, mainly epicatechins and catechins, compounds with antioxidant properties. The ideal is to consume chocolate in an adequate proportion to obtain the benefits, which would be two teaspoons of cocoa powder a day or 40 g of dark chocolate , which is about three squares,” he guides.

Alexandra Corrêa de Freitas, nutritionist and professor of the Nutrition course at the Faculdade Santa Marcelina, points out that milk chocolate contains a certain amount of flavonoids. However, this number is low, compromising the benefits that can be offered compared to cocoa.

“Furthermore, white chocolate, since it does not contain cocoa, does not bring any further health benefits, other than the pleasure of eating it and enjoying its flavour, which is also important. But, in the end, the advice is: the more bitter, the better !”, points out.
