Allergy is the fourth most common disease in the world
The World Health Organization (WHO) has established July 8 as World Allergy Day with the aim of alerting the population to the importance of prevention and treatment of allergic diseases. The doctor dr. Adriana Vilarinho, dermatologist, member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD) and the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), explains that allergy is an erroneous and exacerbated response of the immune system to external substances that are harmless to most people. “The skin, the largest organ in the body, is one of the main sites for allergies, which can come from foods, medications, or even naturally occurring, such as pollen or animal dander,” she says.
Symptoms such as redness and swelling can occur within minutes of ingestion or contact with the allergenic agent or take hours to fully develop. But, at the first sign, the doctor stresses that it is important to seek specialized help, in addition to washing with neutral PH soap and plenty of water or using allergenic and soothing lotions and ointments. “It is essential that the person suspected of having an allergic disease is accompanied by a doctor for the correct diagnosis, adequate treatment, prevention and control of the allergy,” concludes Dr. Adriana.
