“For patients who practice water sports, the ideal, in addition to protection, is not to wear contact lenses. For patients who practice high impact sports, such as combat, we recommend not wearing glasses as they can break and cause injury to the eyelid and cornea. No scratching or rubbing of the eyes,” explained Dr. Giovanna.
In this way, a sportsman should consult an ophthalmologist at least once a year, avoid the involuntary use of solutions that have not been tested ophthalmologically and not use glasses from other people or from non-specialist shops.
“Avoid wearing sunglasses that do not have UVA (Ultraviolet A) and UVB (Ultraviolet B) protection, because they are worse than not wearing sunglasses. Resistance to looking at the sun and increased retinal exposure,” concluded Celano .
It should be remembered that contact sports such as football, basketball, boxing and MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) interfere with eye trauma and the patient must be aware of this, but nothing currently prevents it.
“For exercises in water we have specific protective goggles as well as exercises in the air. Tennis and golf, due to the impact of the ball, can cause a burst fracture (fracture of the bones in the eye socket). When crossing any of these situations, you should seek an ophthalmological emergency immediately,” the ophthalmologist highlighted.
Aids to fight blindness
Initially, someone should rely on their family history of chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and glaucoma. If you are being treated for an illness, maintain regular follow-up with your ophthalmologist and comply with your treatment.
“Glaucoma is a chronic silent disease. Therefore, treatment with eye drops prescribed by the doctor and periodic examinations are extremely important to monitor the evolution of the disease. Cataract is the leading cause of reversible blindness in the world. If diagnosed correctly, we indicate surgery and patients are very often very satisfied and recover their vision,” he explained.
What is the impact of using cell phones and electronic devices before bed?
“Using electronic devices before bed can interfere with sleep induction due to light interfering with melatonin production and release. And, yes (impairs vision). In DMRI patients (degeneration age-related macular disease) by increasing the incidence of blue light on the retina”, concluded Dr. Giovanna Celano.
Data
WHO has predicted that half of the world’s population will be nearsighted by 2050. Also, in Brazil, the expectation increases from 6.6 million to 12.2 million in the period 2020-2040.
In addition to this, a research by the IBOPE (Brazilian Institute of Public Opinion and Statistics) stated that 34% of Brazilians have never consulted an ophthalmologist. And that percentage rises to 44% among people in classes D and E.
