Cleo Pires revealed, on Sunday (9), that she has been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, the ADHD. For her, the diagnosis brought relief, but not without years of anguish and misunderstanding.

“For those who don’t know, I’ve spent my whole life struggling to understand why I had certain behaviors, why my head didn’t work the way people said it should work,” said the artist, referring to the discovery as “a publication.” . “Because things make more sense.”

Cleo says that, during her journey, she was diagnosed with anxiety, depression and even bipolar before realizing it was always ADHD. Such confusion, according to psychiatrist Julia Trindade, is common.

“Often, an adult or teenager seeks help for a case of depression and anxiety and we see that, untreated ADHD is behind it, so [os problemas] they can perform together,” says the doctor, a graduate in Behavioral Neuroscience and a member of the Brazilian Psychiatric Association, in an interview with Terra.

understand ADHD

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder, which, as Julia explains, means that symptoms appear before the age of 12. The condition is mainly expressed by characteristics such as impulsivity, inattention and hyperactivity.

“In girls, it is very common to have more carelessness, that girl more calm, in the lunar world,” exemplifies the psychiatrist.

“We know the relationship between depression and ADHD. There are changes both in the brain and in the behavior itself, so often it’s those girls who can’t do things or boys who are labeled lazy and start feeling like a failure. That’s it. It can generate both depression than anxiety”.

To understand the difference, the expert highlights the “core” of the conditions. While inattention, difficulty planning, impulsivity, and hyperactivity stand out in ADHD cases, the heart of depression is the sadness and loss of pleasure associated with changes in sleep and appetite. In cases of anxiety, the characteristics highlighted are the fear of not making it and performance anxiety.

What is the treatment for ADHD?

ADHD, like other conditions, is treated with psychotherapy and medication, always under psychiatric supervision. Depression and anxiety will be treated with antidepressants and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder with stimulants to help with focus and concentration.
