The meniscus acts as a shock absorber for the knee, protecting the articular cartilage from bumps and knocks. This cartilage is very prone to injury in athletes, overweight people, people with arthritis, osteoarthritis, and even the elderly. Over the years, the cartilage of the meniscus weakens more and can cause acute injuries, due to breaks and traumatic episodes in people between the ages of 20 and 30 or degenerative, in people over the age of 40. After age 65, meniscal tears can occur through movements performed in daily activities, such as going up or down stairs.
