UV-light nail drying increases skin cancer risk, study suggests

The light booth used to dry gel nails leads to cell death, causing changes associated with skin cancer

Gel polish has become a fever for its finish and practicality. However, the use of a UV light dryer, which is common in the procedure, poses a health risk. That’s because, according to a recent study published in Nature, the radiation emitted by these devices can lead to cell death, triggering molecular changes linked to skin cancer.

Research revealed that exposing human and mouse skin cells to UVA light for 20 minutes resulted in 20% to 30% of the cells dying. Three consecutive sessions of the same duration resulted in 65% to 70% of the cells dying. The cells that survived, however, were damaged and mutated in a similar way to those seen in skin cancer.

The head of the dermatology service of the São Vicente de Paulo Hospital (HSVP-RJ), Eduardo Falcão, points out that any part of the body irresponsibly exposed to UV radiation will show photoaging, spots and, in some cases, cancer.

“Since the equipment in question is not for medical use, it is not possible to know the period or form of safe use. Also, it is important to say that people around can be affected, as the radiation can be reflected,” warns the specialist.

Eduardo Falcão points out that light booths are used in medicine to treat certain diseases. However, in these devices it is possible to adjust not only the radiation dose, but also the appropriate time for the indicated treatment.

Skin cancer

Skin cancer is the most frequent type in Brazil and in the world, especially in people over the age of 40, underlines the Ministry of Health. The mainly caused by excessive exposure to the sun.

“The oxidative stress caused by UV radiation has a cumulative effect and, over time, this contributes to the alteration of skin cell DNA and the development of cancer,” says Dr. Ana Carolina Sumam, dermatologist and full member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD).

There are two classifications for skin cancer: melanoma and non-melanoma. Non-melanoma is the most frequent type in Brazil, accounting for 30% of all cases of malignant tumors registered in the country.

According to the Ministry of Health, the main symptoms of skin cancer are:

  • Itchy (pruritic), scaly, or bloody patches;
  • Marks or spots that change size, shape, or color
  • Wounds that don’t heal in 4 weeks.

Skin cancer has a high chance of being cured if it is detected and treated early. Therefore, when you notice any symptoms or signs, it’s important to seek out a health professional as soon as possible to confirm the diagnosis and begin treatment.
