Surgery to extract wisdom teeth, or third molars, is common, but can have serious complications in rare cases.

One example is that of photographer Alessandra Alves, who had atrophied muscles and difficulty opening her mouth fully after having two wisdom teeth extracted in early June. The woman has been doing physiotherapy since then, as revealed by Fantástico this Sunday (16).

Even more serious was another case addressed by the program: an 18-year-old girl died of complications from the operation. Isadora Belon Albanese felt discomfort in the wisdom tooth on the right side and decided to extract the two teeth in the region.

Later, the dentist advised her to also extract the wisdom from the left side as a precaution. It was after this second surgery that the young woman suffered from severe pain and even shortness of breath. Initially, Isadora was treated with antibiotics, but with no improvement, she was hospitalized and died two days later.

Amidst these and other cases, Terra sought out a specialist to clarify when and how to remove her wisdom teeth, if necessary. Watch:

Does everyone need to have their wisdom teeth removed?

“No”, underlines the surgeon-dentist Maria Fernanda Braga. She explains that it depends on the oral cavity of the wisdom tooth and the impacts it can have on oral health. “Surgery is indicated when the dental element in question is compromising the patient’s dental arch,” she clarifies.

When extraction is needed, what’s the best procedure: remove all four wisdom teeth at once, remove one at a time, or remove only the ones that are bothering you?

“It depends from case to case, there is no closed protocol,” underlines the dentist, who specializes in the care of infants and children. According to her, when the surgeon decides to remove all four elements at once, the procedure should be performed in a surgical center.

“There are removal protocols by region, such as right and left side, as it favors dust and only allows you to chew on one side. However, advance planning is essential.”

In case of excessive pain or other intercurrences what to do?

Maria Fernanda points out that it is not common to feel excessive pain after the procedure, as a pre- and post-operative dressing protocol is followed. According to the surgeon, laser therapy is also highly associated after the procedure. Even so, if the patient feels any problems, the recommendation is to contact the professional who performed the surgery for the correct referral.
