Holidays: how to make fun and healthy recipes with the kids

According to the Anhanguera College Nutrition professor, Carina Alcalá, the idea is that health professionals get involved together with the children, using creativity in home-made preparations.

Having activities planned for their free time can be a challenge, but not when they’re really enjoying the month. You can opt for more integrated snacks or dishes: the important thing is to be together with the little ones and involve them in the whole process.

How to make fun recipes for kids?

There are several ways to make traditional recipes more fun to please children during the holidays:

  • “Fruits and vegetables can help color the preparations in a playful way”, suggests the teacher;
  • “Already themed meals they’re great for introducing new foods, including Hulk’s Soup (cabbage or broccoli) and Peppa’s Rice (cooked with beaten beets).”
  • “Another suggestion is to use molds and tools with fun shapes (characters, drawings, fruits), as well as play with children to assemble smileys on plates, hair of lettuce, mouth with tomato and eyes with carrot”, guides.

However, it is also possible to make dishes healthier, as well as more enjoyable. When we take children to the kitchen, we introduce them to food through play. Thus, for example, recipes can be reformulated into versions with more fruit.

  • “In cakes and pies we can replace wheat flour with wholemeal, oatmeal or almond flour. The sugar and oil can be halved, and adding a grated apple or mashed banana in pies helps make them sweeter and moister, as well as a way to get babies started eat more fruit“, explains Alcalà.

In the same sense, take advantage of the game to create homemade versions of familiar foods from the little ones. Products may not be as healthy in their industrialized versions. They might like them even more, see?

  • Carina gives the best advice: “Make homemade croquettes, hamburgers with lean ground beef, homemade ketchup, ‘fries’ in the oven or in the electric fryer, frozen fruit milkshake, homemade popcorn and fruit fondue with chocolate fondant”.
