The Italian goes viral when he warns about pickpockets

Nicknamed Batwoman, a woman named Monica is part of a group that has been circulating in Venice for 30 years, warning tourists of possible thefts

On social networks there is talk of nothing else: an Italian woman on the streets of Venice brandishes the camera of her cell phone, points it at a girl or a group of them, and shouts loud and clear: “Attention pickpocket, attention pickpockets”, which means “Beware of pickpockets”.

Monica, the voice behind the videos, said in an interview with Newsweek that she is part of a group called Cittadini Non Distratti, which has been roaming the streets of Venice for more than 30 years, warning tourists of thefts. The group even created a file Facebook page, but it was thanks to Tik Tok that it took on viral proportions and, right under the name of the account, the phrase “we’re back” was placed.

To the Facebook alerts are made daily on the regions where “light hands” work the most. Two of the most popular places, where tourists tend to get distracted, are Piazza San Marco and the Rialto Bridge.

See some highlights below:

The Venice Police Headquarters does not support the work of Monica, defined by many as Batwoman, because many pickpockets are minors and it is not allowed to publish their images on the internet. The search in Italy is allowed only in case of flagrante delicto.
