National Cookie Day: Healthy options for exercisers

It is a delicacy available in every corner of the world.

July 20 is National Biscuit Day and celebrates this food that remains in the Brazilian “mouth of the people”. Usually made with wheat flour, eggs, sugar and cooked in the oven in several portions. Due to these characteristics, could its consumption affect those who train?

National Biscuit Day as an awareness for a sportsman

“Cookies are generally not the best food for exercisers. Whether as a snack, before or after a workout. Cookies are generally high in sugar, saturated fat, and low in nutrients essential for proper functioning of the body, such as protein , fiber, good fats, which may not be beneficial for sports performance, recovery and may even interfere with hypertrophy or weight loss,” he told Sport Life exclusively clinical and sports nutritionist Dereck Oak.

This above statement is based on the fact that, in order to function well, the body needs adequate “fuel” to provide energy during exercise and also during the muscle recovery time after training.

“Cookies are generally not an efficient source of energy as they have high glycemic indexes and can lead to blood sugar spikes followed by rapid drops resulting in low energy, fatigue and sleep,” Dereck pointed out.

Despite this, Oak specified that he does not intend any food as “forbidden” for those who exercise, but only the “less indicated”, which should be ingested sporadically, as is the case for most industrialized biscuits and, above all, those with fillings.

“The first thing is that this food (filled cookie) has a high sugar content, which can cause an increase in body fat, insulin spikes, increased risk of diabetes, among others. saturated fats and trans fats, the consumption regular intake of these fats is associated with an increase in bad LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein) cholesterol and with a greater risk of developing cardiovascular disease”, guaranteed the nutritionist.

What are the suggestions for consumption on National Cookie Day?

Another curiosity is that the least caloric biscuit depends on the brand, the ingredients used and, at the same time, there are low-calorie biscuits that are not good for health, for example: water and salt biscuits.

“If I had to pick which cookie is the least calorie and healthy to include in a diet, I’d say it’s the rice cookie. In addition to being low in calories, this type of cookie has a low glycemic index and a significant amount of fiber,” she indicated. .

As for a sportsman’s consumption, Dereck suggested whole-wheat biscuits with no added sugar for a snack. Or even at breakfast to be the carbohydrate choice for the meal alongside low-calorie protein yogurt with fruit.

“As a pre-workout it can also be a good option because cookies are high in carbohydrates. Intra-workout would not be a good option because it is a solid food and takes longer to fully digest. Consuming a food like this during the workout exercise can cause nausea or reflux. Post-workout, the biscuit will serve to replenish the glycogen stores consumed during exercise,” he clarified.

What is the interference of the hypertrophy cookie?

“Cookies do not directly interfere with hypertrophy, but they can interfere indirectly for several reasons. The first is that they are empty calories, i.e. cookies are nutritionally low-calorie foods, without proteins, vitamins and minerals. In addition, they contribute to muscle development. In addition , have a high glycemic index, have no fiber, generate little or no satiety and a hunger “bounce” caused by the rapid decline in insulin after consuming them, which can lead to excessive consumption of calories and instead of gaining lean body mass, ends up gaining fat mass,” concluded clinical and sports nutritionist Dereck Oak.
