What we know about The Lord of the Rings Season 2: The Rings of Power

Whether or not you liked the first season of the prequel to Tolkien’s epic saga, we already know for sure that this story will stick with us for five seasons. Gathered together what is known about the show’s sequel so far.

No sentimentality, just business: The rights holders of Dr. R. Tolkien’s works, JRR Tolkien Estate, only allowed Prime to acquire the rights to adapt the Lord of the Rings prequel if the channel s committed to filming and broadcasting at least 50 hours of finished material (in terms of seasons, one could, of course, file more, but it is the material that imposes it – the series are long). “There are things in the first season that don’t pay off until the fifth season. We even know what our final plan will be in the final episode,” co-showrunner JD Payne explained.

In the second season of “Rings of Power” will be a new character, the elf Cirdan

The results of the casting are not yet known, but Cirdan is described as the oldest and wisest of the elves.

In March 2023, it was announced that Ciarán Hinds (Rome, Game of Thrones), Rory Kinnear (Penny Dreadful, Quantum of Solace) and Tanya Moody (The Clinic, Homeland) had joined the cast in major roles, but the names of the characters have yet to be announced.

The second season was filmed in the UK

The first season was filmed in New Zealand during the pandemic, and for the second season Prime Video set up a multishow tech hub in the UK. Work has been in full swing there since October 2022. Zthe SAG-AFTRA strike will not affect the show, as filming wrapped at the end of June 2023 (the main thing is that post-production specialists don’t go on strike).

The new part of the show will be dedicated to Sauron

The first season was basically the story of Galadriel. And in his finale, we learned that his Halbrand crush is none other than Sauron. “Hopefully after the last episode airs, audiences will watch the whole season again, and now it will be a different experience,” said co-showrunner Patrick McKay. “We hope that as we move into the second season, people will start looking at the first season differently, like through a new lens.”

Are you looking forward to the second season of “Rings of Power”?

Yes very!

Not particularly

“Now Sauron could just be Sauron,” says McKay. “Like Tony Soprano or Walter White. He is a diabolical but complete character. We felt that if we had done that in the first season, it would have overshadowed everything else. In the second season There is canonical history of the rise of the Dark Lord.”
