The expert explains how to be healthy and independent in old age

Research indicates that, from 2030 onwards, there will be more old people than children living in Brazil. But what helps people live longer? The longevity of Brazilians has increased, i.e. people live longer! In Brazil, life expectancy has risen to 76.8 years, according to a 2020 survey by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), an increase of 3.3 years over the 10-year period.

However, according to Bernardo Sampaio, physiotherapist and clinical director of the ITC Vertebral and the Trata Institute, Guarulhos unit, he comments that old age comes for people with physical changes in the body.

“As we age, it is common for musculoskeletal changes to occur, such as loss of muscle strength, decreased flexibility and balance problems. These factors may limit the ability of older adults to perform simple tasks such as getting out of bed, performing basic needs such as urinating and defecating, as well as climbing stairs or lifting light objects.

1. Being in constant motion

A sedentary lifestyle, i.e. lack of physical activity, is associated with various diseases. The recommendation for achieving longevity, therefore, is to keep the body in constant movement. The importance of exercise to maintain health and thus delay the aging process.

It is important to underline that this practice of physical activity must be continuous and, if possible, from childhood, to ensure maximum benefits and, of course, always with the help of a specialist.

It is essential for an older person to perform stretching exercises daily, as this practice contributes significantly to maintaining the flexibility and range of motion of the jointsavoiding muscle shortening and stiffness.

Additionally, stretching helps prevent injury, improves blood circulation, reduces discomfort caused by osteoarthritis, and promotes an overall sense of well-being, enabling seniors to enjoy more active and independent lives.

3. Take care of food

Having a well-nourished body is considered an essential factor for good health. Food strongly influences our body, both for deficits and excesses. A balanced diet that which increases longevity is that which supplies the nutrients necessary for the maintenance, repair and growth of body tissues, without excessive food consumption.

4. Always consult a doctor

It is very important to make regular visits to your doctor to monitor your overall health and address any health concerns or conditions before they become a bigger problem.
