Started in 1950, the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences at the University of California Riverside (UCR), has a popular avocado breeding program. To date, the project has patented and released eight new variations of the fruit.

That program heralded the arrival of yet another variation, dubbed Luna UCR. This development is the result of a long period of creation and research, but it already shows great advantages over the avocados already sold on supermarket shelves and chosen by consumers.

According to the Food & Wine portal, one of the biggest benefits of the new fruit is that the skin changes from emerald green to dark black when ripe, making it easier for the consumer to identify if the food is already good to eat. Also, it’s a great option to make guacamole recipe.

Approximately 80% of avocados consumed in the world are Hass and there are subtle differences between the two. Luna still has a long way to go to become the most consumed, but, not yet launched, it already proves that it will easily win the hearts of buyers.
