The number of individuals with obesity is increasing every day and hence, the number of patients requiring bariatric surgery to lose weight is also increasing. Jojo Todynho, for example, performed bariatric surgery yesterday. But in many cases, after major weight loss, surgery is indicated.
According to plastic surgeon Beatriz Lassance, a member of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery, in these cases excess skin may appear in certain parts of the body, such as the abdomen, arms, legs, breasts and buttocks, which causes great discomfort for the patient.
“In addition to the cosmetic problem, skin that was taut from excess fat and has not fully tightened again after weight loss can lead to complications, such as difficulty moving and moisture in skin folds that predispose to fungal infections, such as example, ”explains the doctor.
Where does it bother you the most?
The abdomen is the place that most annoys patients. “In this case, the recommended procedure is abdominoplasty, a procedure that corrects sagging skin, whether or not associated with muscle relaxation of the abdominal wall, and can also act on the fat located in the region,” explains plastic surgeon Tácito Ferreira, member of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery.
According to your doctor, a tummy tuck is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes two to four hours, depending on the extent of the procedure. The surgeon makes an incision that allows for the removal of excess skin and fat while squeezing and suturing the abdominal muscles. “The skin around your belly button will also be reshaped during a full tummy tuck,” says the plastic surgeon.
Post-bariatric plastic surgery
When the disorder is also in other parts of the body, reconstructive surgery, known by many as post-bariatric plastic surgery, is indicated. Performed under general anesthesia, reconstructive surgery aims to remove excess skin and restore body contour through a series of procedures that are difficult to perform in a single surgical stage, as the surgical risk increases the longer the time and the extent of the intervention.
“Reconstructive surgery can include operations such as abdominoplasty or abdominal dermolipectomy, which removes excess skin from the abdomen, facelift, which removes sagging from the face, mammoplasty, which aims to reposition the breasts and can be combined with placement of silicone implants. , torsoplasty, which consists in the removal of excess skin from the back, dermolipectomy of the thighs and brachioplasty, to remove excess skin from the arms”, underlines the doctor.
You must be ready for the procedure.
According to the specialist, before resorting to the plastic surgeon, it is necessary to go back to the team that performed the bariatric surgery to check if you are able to undergo the surgery, in order to avoid complications.
“The prerequisites for performing reconstructive surgery is to have one’s weight stabilized for at least 6 months to avoid weight changes after the surgery, which could compromise the result, and to avoid individual variations from a nutritional and psychological point of view, because the most the patient’s health is important,” completes Beatriz Lassance.
Among the risks of reconstructive surgery there are complications such as the appearance of seromas, hematomas, infections and embolism. But it is possible to avoid these problems through certain treatments, such as an adequate preoperative clinical evaluation, quitting smoking at least one month before surgery, avoiding anticoagulant drugs to reduce the risk of bleeding during the procedure, and using antithrombotic measures during surgery. In case of abdominoplasty, Tácito Ferreira recommends the patient to rest at home.
“However, it is advisable that you walk within the perimeter of your home, with the help of a companion who helps blood circulation. This walk should be done with a forward bend in the first 10-15 days so as not to force the stitches”, says the doctor.
basic care
As far as basic care is concerned, it is possible to bathe as early as the third day with the help of a companion.
“The diet should be high in fluids, laxative foods and fiber, as it can be difficult to go to the toilet in the first few days. The return to the office takes place 3 to 7 days after the operation, when the surgeon evaluates the vitality of the skin and the incisions. Typically the first week is when the patient feels most uncomfortable, but this improves over time so much that many return to work after 30 days,” says the doctor.
Also, after being discharged, you must be protected for a period of 15 days to a month. During this time it is important not to smoke or consume alcohol and to avoid carrying heavy weights or exercising.
“It is also essential that, after surgery, you adopt a healthy diet, practice regular physical activity and take care of your skin to maintain the results obtained with plastic surgery,” recommends Beatriz Lassance. “But the most important thing is to consult a trained professional before performing any procedure and to follow her advice after surgery.”
