A family from Barbacena, Minas Gerais, claims to have one of the oldest cats in the world. According to Esmeralda’s guardians, the animal would be almost 29 years old. At that age, the Minas Gerais kitten would surpass the age of Guinness World Records title holder Briton Flossie, 27 years old.

The case came to light after Esmeralda was away from home for two days and was rescued by firefighters. “Esmeralda’s disappearance was reported by the firefighters. From then on, some media asked us if she was the oldest cat in the world,” said Maria Eliza, the cat’s current tutor, in an interview with G1.

According to the family, Esmeralda’s adoption took place in 1995, so much so that on the cat’s first vaccination card, the date of birth is recorded as December 1, 1994. The animal’s veterinarian, Maria Janete Campos, speaks as if this day were been fixed.

Esmeralda's age came to light after the fire department issued a notice looking for the cat; she has since been found and it is she with her her family

“After evaluation, we concluded that it was not a kitten, as it had already changed all its teeth and the size was compatible with a cat that was already at least 1 year old. Therefore, we recorded it as having been born on December 1, 1994 “, the vet also told the G1. “The only thing he has is dermatitis on his eyelids, but other than that, he’s an example of life and longevity,” he added.

Tutor Maria Eliza reveals that the cat has always been present in the family’s life. “She was with my children as they were growing up and saw my two grandchildren being born. We have created an immense love for her. She enjoys playing and interacting with the boys, has a relationship with a dog and has adopted our other kitten, with us a year ago, like a son,” said Maria Eliza.

Maria Eliza has come to seek information to register the cat in Guinness Book, but the family cannot afford the sum of around R$ 4,000. For now, Flossie, 27, remains the world’s oldest cat; neither she nor Esmeralda, however, broke the record of Creme Puff, a feline who lived 38 years.
