From September 2, São Paulo hosts the first edition of The Town, with attractions such as Post Malone, Demi Lovato, Bruno Mars, Maroon 5, Foo Fighters and much more. To face the marathon of shows with the temperature at its maximum, facing exposure to the sun, tiredness and even some inconveniences such as thirst and hunger (especially if you want a seat close to the stage), we have invited the doctors to give advice on what do before, during and after the event to avoid many common problems felt in the body.

Get plenty of rest the night before

A good night’s sleep gives the body a lot more energy, so it’s essential to rest before the event. Also pay attention to your diet, avoiding more fatty foods and, at the same time, very restrictive diets. Remember that your body needs nutrients to run through the marathon.

“Before the event, it is preferable not to skip any of the large meals, as this would throw off the routine. A hearty breakfast, with fruit, eggs or yoghurt, cereals and oatmeal, for example, will help you carry through the day,” explains nutritionist Marcella Garcez, director and professor of the Associação Brasileira de Nutrologia (ABRAN).

Get ready for the concert marathon

The Town is São Paulo’s largest music, culture and art festival, with 6 stages and 360,000 m2, requiring visitors to spend the whole day walking.

“Since not everyone is in adequate physical condition for the concert marathon, problems such as cramps and muscle pain, especially in the legs and feet, are common in this type of event,” emphasizes vascular surgeon Aline Lamaita, a member of the Brazilian association Society of Angiology and Vascular Surgery and the American College of LifeStyle Medicine.

In this sense, it is important to take some precautions, such as choosing the right shoes to face the day of the fashion shows. “Shoes should offer stability, have the right fit for your foot and, of course, be comfortable. In addition, the shoes you choose must match your foot type,” explains Marcos Cortelazo, orthopedic specialist in knee and sports traumatology, member of the Brazilian Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology (SBOT), who also recommends warming up before leave home.

“Warming up is essential to prepare the whole body, from joints to organs like the heart, for the next exercise. Carrying out any physical activity with muscles and joints still stiff can favor the onset of injuries”, explains the orthopedic surgeon.

As for nutrition, don’t forget to consume good carbohydrates, preferably whole grains, as your body will need a lot of energy.

Take only the essentials

You will spend hours on your feet, so carrying a lot of weight, putting extra strain on your spine and joints, will make your situation even worse.

“Use fanny packs or backpacks that distribute weight evenly across your back, thus avoiding pain and discomfort,” says Aline.

In your rucksack, remember to bring light foods: «The secret is to plan ahead and buy healthy snacks, protein bars, dried fruit, fresh or dried fruit and natural snacks to take along the route, ensuring light and healthy snacks, plus the advantage of spending less,” says Marcella.

Stay hydrated and avoid drinking too much.

During the day of the shows it is essential to pay attention to dehydration and consume plenty of water.

“That’s because intense heat and excessive drinking can increase the incidence of cramps, muscle pain, and fluid retention,” Aline points out.

In addition to drinking plenty of water, it is also worth taking fruits such as apples, pears and melons, as they help hydrate the body. And be very careful with excessive alcohol consumption.

“Besides dehydration, another important factor caused by alcohol is kidney overload. Ethanol interferes with the function of antidiuretic hormone, which ensures that the body does not lose too much water, causing the kidneys to stop concentrating urine, losing more water than usual. Since the drink imposes a great effort on the body to eliminate the substance, it is necessary to dilute it in water and eliminate it in the form of urine, causing dehydration,” explains nephrologist Caroline Reigada, specialist in Intensive Care Medicine at the Brazilian Association of Therapy intensive.

protect your skin

It is very common for people to forget to protect their skin from solar radiation during music festivals and other outdoor events. However, exposure to sunlight during these events tends to be prolonged and intense, which can damage the skin.

“When they reach unprotected skin, the sun’s UVA and UVB rays generate cumulative damage that leads to photoaging, with the early appearance of wrinkles, blemishes and sagging, as well as precancerous skin lesions,” warns Society member dermatologist Lilian Brasileiro Dermatology Brazilian.

Therefore, it is essential to use a photoprotector before leaving the house, as well as replicate the product throughout the day to ensure its effectiveness. “It is important that sunscreen is effective against UVA and UVB rays. It is advisable to opt for products with an SPF of at least 30. But it is interesting to choose a photoprotector also formulated with antioxidant ingredients, which offers further benefits against the damage caused by solar radiation», advises the doctor.

Use fashion to your advantage

Another way to enjoy the festival without having to worry about sun damage to your skin is through the use of physical barriers, such as sunglasses, which must have UVB-protected lenses to prevent damage to the ocular melanocytes and eyelid region, and hats and clothes, which should preferably be made with fabrics that contain substances capable of protecting against the sun’s rays, mainly UVB rays.

“It is also important to use clothes, hats, caps, sunglasses, umbrellas and umbrellas. Any measure that prevents sun exposure in the affected region should be encouraged,” explains dermatologist Paola Pomerantzeff, member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology.

Try not to sit still for too long.

Among the types of visitors to music festivals, there are those who, instead of walking around to see the most diverse artists, prefer to stay put and approach the stages to make sure they see their favorite singer up close. If this applies to you, be very careful, because standing still for a long time can cause discomfort such as swelling in the leg area, which, in extreme cases, can lead to blood clots, thrombosis or even pulmonary embolism.

“It is also important to take breaks to sit down and lift your feet, lightening the weight of the lower limbs,” advises Aline. “The same caveat applies if you are traveling to the festival, whether by car, plane or bus. In this case, the ideal is to take breaks every two hours to walk and move, especially stimulating the lower limbs”.

Take care of your skin immediately when you get home

The cures don’t stop after the festival ends. When you get home, it’s important to invest in a powerful skincare routine that can remove the dirt that has built up on your skin (and your photoprotector) and treat any damage your skin may have sustained throughout the day. For example, it is essential to use a face soap or a cleansing foam with a creamy and velvety formula, capable of removing oil and dirt from the skin without damaging it. Subsequently, the dermatologist Paola Pomerantzeff recommends the use of moisturizing and soothing face masks.

“The topical hydration of the skin after intense sun exposure is very important, because while we sunbathe our skin tends to dehydrate, which compromises cell renewal and, consequently, the texture of the skin”, warns the expert .

To avoid this problem, choose face masks that contain active ingredients such as aloe vera, which has moisturizing and calming properties at the same time.

Relax

Allow yourself a moment of rest between one day and the other of the festival, with a good night’s sleep, so that your body can regain energy and your legs can rest properly. According to Dr. Aline, sleeping late and standing for long hours during these events tends to retain fluids and bloat, especially for people with poor circulation, obese people, pregnant women, and people with high blood pressure. .

“It is important to remember that if the swelling persists for a long time, the incidence of erysipelas, phlebitis and even thrombosis increases,” explains the doctor.

If possible, schedule a relaxing massage for the day after the concert marathon.

And if your legs and feet swell…

In this case, the doctor recommends sleeping with your legs elevated, placing a pillow underneath, and applying cold compresses at the end of the day. Also, you need to pay attention to your diet during the festival, avoiding the consumption of sodas and industrialized foods, as an excess of sodium can raise blood pressure and worsen swelling.

“It is also important never to burn your feet or apply any type of hot compress, as these can cause blood vessels to dilate and aggravate the condition,” warns Aline Lamaita.

“For those who already have a predisposition to water retention, consult a vascular specialist, as there are drugs, socks and even creams that can make the legs much lighter and healthier to enjoy the show,” concludes the doctor.
