The theory raised by a new Canadian study is that vaping and smoking can lead to oxidative stress and thus affect blood vessels in the eye.

It is no news that science highlights the damage that vaping causes to health. However, a new study published in the journal JAMA Ophthalmology says e-cigarettes may be related to eye problems. The Canadian survey focused on the frequency and severity of eye disease symptoms reported by adolescents and young adults who use the devices.
In total, the researchers recruited 4,351 participants, aged 13 to 24 years. These individuals were classified according to their use of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, or both, and were asked about frequency of use.
Participants were also asked to rate their vision and to rate the frequency and severity of 10 symptoms that occur in and around the eyes: eye discomfort, pain, burning, itching, redness, dryness, sensitivity to light, vision blurred vision, eye strain and headache. .
Of the participants, 50.2% used e-cigarettes and 36.5% smoked regular cigarettes. Of the 1,092 users in the last 30 days, 44.3% were dual users. Of the 919 users over the past seven days, 45.8% were dual users.
The study revealed that participants who smoked cigarettes only once in their lifetime were more likely to experience burning, blurred vision and dryness than the others. Regular cigarette users within the last 30 days were more likely to have more severe and more frequent blurred vision than the others.
Vaping and smoking cause eye problems
Between 1.1% and 3.9% of dual users reported severe to very severe eye symptoms, and between 0.9% and 4.3% reported daily symptoms. People who used both e-cigarettes and regular cigarettes in the past seven days were more likely to experience more severe and more frequent discomforts than all other participants.
According to the researchers, the findings suggest that dual users are at a higher risk of eye symptoms, regardless of the frequency of use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes.
But why does this relationship occur? The theory is that oxidative stress, which can affect blood vessels in the eye, is the cause. However, the team itself acknowledges that more studies are needed to validate the findings.
Vaping causes health problems
Cigarette, vaporizer and other fumes: which is more harmful?
Vaping can affect many areas of the human body. The most common is the lung. An article conducted by the Center for Tobacco Research, of the Ohio State University (USA), states that the use of E-cigarettes can cause breathing problems in the first month. This period carries a 78% higher risk of feeling short of breath and a 50% higher risk of bronchitis symptoms.
Also, in 2022, a study published in Arteriosclerosis, thrombosis and vascular biologyreiterated that the vaping is bad for the heart – more than previously thought.
