Research published this week in the journal Obesity suggests that morning is the best time of day to exercise. Exercising between 7 and 9 am could help you lose weight.
Researcher Tongyu Ma of Hong Kong Polytechnic University and his team used two years of data from a large North American survey, conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, that included exercise, dietary habits and and lifestyle of over 5,200 adults at least 20 years old. Participants wore accelerometers to record daily activity levels.
According to the findings, people who exercised at moderate to vigorous intensity in the morning had lower body mass indexes (BMIs) than those who exercised at midday or in the evening.
Factors that may explain the results
The lead author admits that other factors may explain this difference besides exercise time. People who performed moderate-to-vigorous intensity exercise in the morning, for example, were more than a decade older than those who exercised later in the day. It is possible, therefore, that age generates different responses to exercise.
Other factors may also have played a role, such as the fact that the morning jocks were predominantly white and female, had college degrees and had never used tobacco or alcohol.
The group that exercised in the morning were also more likely to exercise at the same time every day. Compared to those who exercised later, they were even more likely to consume fewer calories and, interestingly, spent more time without moving than people in the other groups.
The researchers point out that you need to take all these warnings into account before changing your routine. However, other studies have already highlighted the benefits of morning exercises for weight loss, while activity at the end of the day, with the body well warmed up, would be more suitable for those who need to improve performance.
Logical or biological explanation?
It’s possible that prioritizing early morning exercise helps maintain a high frequency, as there’s always the risk of having to work overtime at work or another commitment that may result in postponing exercise until the next day. And, in order to lose weight, physical activity must be done regularly.
Another possible explanation is that our biological clock is more focused, so to speak, on metabolic processes in the morning, which would contribute to weight loss.
Some experts suggest that exercising before eating, or after a small meal, can facilitate fat burning, since, after a full night of fasting, the body is left without enough carbohydrates to turn into energy.
It’s also worth noting that the benefits of exercise are achieved in the last few hours after you finish your workout, and that spending the day with this more active metabolism can be more appealing than going to bed right away.
In any case, the most important thing is that people are able to incorporate exercise into their routine, at all times. And if it’s too difficult to do physical activity without first having a good breakfast, don’t stress: eat a healthy meal and get moving.
