The movement aims to raise public awareness of the importance of early detection of breast cancer
Created in the 1980s by Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, the Pink October is an international movement that aims to raise public awareness about the early diagnosis of breast cancer. Every year, from October 1st to 31st, governments, private entities and non-governmental organizations launch initiatives to spread awareness of the disease.
The incidence of cases shows that the effort is worth it. This is the most common type of cancer among women, and it is also the one that causes the most deaths among them. This year, 73,610 cases are expected to be confirmed, according to an estimate from the National Cancer Institute (INCA).
What is Pink October
The history of the campaign begins in 1980 with the death of the American Susan G. Komen. She had been diagnosed with breast cancer three years earlier and had battled the disease, but she had not survived after the cancer had spread to other organs.
It was then that her sister Nancy turned her story into a mission by creating an NGO to promote cancer control and treatment. The first Pink October took place in 1986, three years after Nancy herself had had cancer.
The pink ribbon was born as a symbol in 1991. The accessory has become emblematic and has always been associated with the initiative.
Main goal
Breast cancer is the most common type in women, which only adds to the appeal of the campaigns. As the Ministry of Health explains, the disease occurs when there is an abnormal development of breast cells, which multiply repeatedly until the formation of a malignant tumor.
A risk factor is directly linked to genetics, so if a family member – especially a mother, sister or daughter – has a positive diagnosis, other relatives must undergo even more frequent medical checks. This does not only apply to women, as breast tissue tumors also develop in men, although rarely.
Therefore early diagnosis applies to everyone. The earlier it is discovered, the sooner treatment begins and the greater the chance of success.
Importance of self-examination and mammography
One thing every woman can and should do is self-examine, palpate her breasts. It’s a simple gesture that can help you notice any “lumps” in the area and quickly consult a doctor.
This obviously does not replace the clinical examination carried out by the mastologist. Therefore, it is necessary to consult periodically and, starting from the age of 40, undergo a mammogram every year – this is the best way to diagnose cancer.
Pink October in Brazil
Having started in the 1980s in the United States, the campaign did not take long to reach Brazil. Every year the month is characterized by actions in favor of the rapid detection of tumors.
By law, since 2018, the government must also promote conferences, events and educational activities on the topic, as well as conduct media campaigns and make information available to the population. Another intervention that has become mandatory is the lighting of public buildings with pink lights.
What to do in Pink October
Ways to help the campaign during the month include sharing information. It is worth demanding actions from public bodies, responsible for creating initiatives for the control and early diagnosis of the disease, and also seeking the support of the private sector in the fight.
