Demand for social-emotional education schools increases by 316%:

Demand from schools for solutions targeting social-emotional education grew 316% in 2023, according to a survey conducted by Educa, an edtech focused on solutions for teaching social-emotional skills to children and youth.

Between January and June, 250 schools sought to add social-emotional studies within their curriculum, while in the same period in 2022 only 60 schools reported this interest.

According to Jaime Ribeiro, CEO and co-founder of To educate, the growing demand for social-emotional teaching, among other factors, is a response to the wave of violent attacks occurring in the country. Since 2018 there have been 14 attacks on schools. In 2023 alone, three important cases with national repercussions were registered in Sao Paulo (SP), Blumenau (SC) and Cambé (PR). The number is three times higher than events recorded between 2003 and 2017.

According to the expert, recent cases have ended up revealing the vulnerability of educational institutions in dealing with socio-emotional problems, such as anxiety and depression, bullying and prejudice.

“We live with an avalanche of mental and social disorders. In this scenario, the school can choose to be passive or support families. Today, fortunately, we see that the trend has been the second option”, underlines Jaime Ribeiro.

The role of new technologies

Another point that helps to understand this growing demand is the impact caused by the emergence and popularization of new technologies. Jaime Ribeiro explains that the arrival of new resources ends up directly influencing the behavior models of society, especially children.

“Schools need to promote this dialogue on social-emotional education with a focus on digital literacy and the importance of attention when using social networks, as well as new artificial intelligence tools,” he says.

Educator, psychologist, ambassador and co-founder of Educa, Rossandro Klinjey highlights the importance of this movement for educational institutions to intensify their focus on developing students’ social-emotional skills.

“The world has changed and it is useless to close our eyes and believe that we will go back to living as before. Improving social skills and effectively managing emotions are not mere luxuries, but essential tools for navigating the complexity of our current society. With them it becomes possible to face and resolve challenges, whether personal or professional, in a more constructive and resilient way,” says Klinjey.
