Celebrities have used abdominal vacuum to get a perfect body. Yoga teacher warns about the importance of thinking beyond aesthetics
The search for the perfect body has pushed celebrities such as Virgínia Fonseca, Gracyanne Barbosa and Maíra Cardi to look for new techniques to obtain the long-awaited flat stomach. Often these “new techniques” are actually old, or even thousand-year-old, methods. This is the case of the abdominal vacuum, a yoga exercise that brings a series of benefits. But is weight loss one of them?
What is abdominal vacuum?
The abdominal vacuum, a technique present in ancient yoga, consists of dragging the abdomen towards the spine, activating the deep muscles of the core, such as the transversus abdominis, through an active massage of the viscera. It was originally a practice aimed at improving posture, breathing and concentration during yoga positions.
Today, the abdominal vacuum continues to be an important technique in yoga, with benefits that extend beyond the classroom. Strengthens the core, stabilizes the spine, improves digestion and tones the abdominal organs. Additionally, it helps develop deeper body awareness and can relieve back pain.
“It is a technique that originally aims to perform an active massage of the viscera through muscular contractions, which brings numerous benefits such as strengthening the abdominal muscles, improving digestive functions, posture, cramps and back pain”, he explains yoga teacher and naturopath Ravi Kaiut.
Does abdominal vacuum help you lose weight?
Ravi warns that the abdominal vacuum cannot be used alone for aesthetic purposes. “Weight loss is the result of a much deeper improvement in health that generates consequences, such as weight regulation,” he says.
“Therefore, the aesthetic benefits are only a small part of all the benefits of this technique, which is originally an abdominal massage. It is therefore worth learning more about this technique in addition to weight loss,” emphasizes Ravi Kaiut.
